Ski touring

The white fascination.

Sulden has 300 days of sunshine per year. The sunbeams are glistening on the snow covered “King Ortler”, which dominates the other 14 mountains exceeding 3000m altitude. Although 200 years have passed since its first ascend, it is still a fascinating mountain.
More and more people are attacked by ski touring and enjoy the mountain range off the beaten track. Ambitious ski tourers can enjoy the panoramic view from the Sulden peak (3376m of altitude) on Königsspitze, Zebru and Ortler in the east, the Ceveldale in the south west, the Weißkugel in the north and the Brenta group in the south.

Tip for ski tours:

Pleasure ski tour to the Sulden peak, 3376 m above sea level
Description: simple tour with few difficulties to pick up the trail. In the beginning of winter and at its end it is advisable to use a rope because of the glacier. The use of the cable car saves you a considerable part of the ascent.
Starting point: Sulden 1900 m above sea level, at the car park of the cable car.
Ascent: You start at the cable car valley station, skirt the mid-station and walk up to the top station of the cable car (2600). There you follow the slope in south-east direction and leave the slope to head for the Sulden glacier which inclines moderately. You skirt the impressive “ice-bridges” and turn left. You continue southward, a steeply inclined section up to the Janiger notch, cross it and turn right underneath the north face. For the ascent to the peak follow the west ridge.
Descent: as the ascent. If the conditions are good, you can also descend via the north face. (decline 42°).
Altitude difference: 1470m
Time for the ascend: 3 hours and 45 minutes to 4 hours.

Basic Ski touring course in Sulden

This is the ideal course for all novices. Especially beginners should attend such a basic course. It is required that you are fit and that you are in command of the swinging movement plough lifting (“Stemmschwung”). We will undertake easier tours to the peaks around Sulden, practise skiing in deep powder snow and you will get an introduction into meteorology and fundamental knowledge of avalanches. If desired, there will be enough time to ski also on the slopes. Touring equipment may be rented.
