The gigant Ortler
Once upon a time our gorges and valleys were populated by generations of giants. Among those giants there lived a strapping boy called Ortler, who grew and grew and eventually towered over all trees and mountains. He was bursting with pride after having reached the highest height and mocked the entire world. However, there was a dwarf from Stilfs, who climbed up the giant’s legs and body all the way up to his head. There he turned a somersault singing along: “Oh giant Ortler how small are you, smaller than the ‘tiny nagger’. You have grown for many thousand years with your nose up in the air. What for, what for, what use is it to you? The dwarf from Stilfs, the undersized pipsqueak, is higher still, is higher still up here on your top”.
Annoyed about the dwarf’s teasing, giant Ortler tried to catch him and to hurl him off his head. However, he felt he has become stiff and lame. Alarmed by this he completely froze to stone and ice.
